It has been prepared specifically for Konya Metropolitan Municipality. Think tanks address the activities of local governments that vary according to the region in which they are located, bringing alternative solutions to current global and urban challenges to the agenda.
Urbanization can have a positive impact on sustainable development. Proper planning and management can reduce poverty and inequality by improving employment opportunities, education, and health. Poorly planned urbanization can lead to the proliferation of informal settlements and slums, increased urban poverty, higher crime rates, air and environmental pollution, rising levels of inequality and social exclusion. It is important to plan urbanization carefully to avoid these negative consequences.
Local governments are responsible for improving working and living conditions, promoting economic activity, supporting social or cultural life, providing green spaces and landscaping, implementing sustainable transport as well as infrastructure systems, realizing planned urbanization , actively involving the public in decision-making processes, and other similar responsibilities. The quality of life of local residents is directly related to how well these responsibilities are fulfilled.
The report's first section discusses the structure of local governments and their current activities. It highlights how cities are directly impacted by challenges such as increased market competition due to globalization, rapid technological advancements, climate change, and dwindling resources like water, food, and energy. As a result, local governments must implement new strategies. The second part of the report analyses the current activities of local governments in various service areas, as assessed by think tanks in different geographies. Think tanks that communicate and operate effectively across borders, particularly through technological developments, have facilitated the rapid transfer of new ideas and policy approaches between the global and local spheres. Think tanks have considered local governance practices in different parts of the world, leading to the development of alternative policy recommendations to address global and urban challenges. This has contributed to the creation of inclusive, innovative, sustainable, and solution-oriented urban policies, improving the quality of life for local residents.
