China and the Taiwan Issue, Deterrence Strategy

China's dangerous growth, its malevolent intentions, its demonstrations with airplanes on the border of Taiwan's airspace, and the fact that the island is only 100 miles from China, could make it impossible for the United States to win a war. Elaine Luria from the Republican side said that what Beijing needs to understand is that when it comes to Taiwan, the US President will take a direct military intervention decision in a possible situation without wasting time with Congress. If the US fails to defend Taiwan, its credibility will be damaged.

It is emphasized that it would be the best policy to deter China from thinking of taking over Taiwan. Before making a decision, politicians need to analyze China-Taiwan relations correctly and determine whether it is a vital issue for America or just a desire. It is also emphasized that policymakers should consider whether 'deterrence through denial' and 'deterrence through punishment' will be successful or not.
