Our study comprehensively examines the economic and social impacts of the potential contribution of ethnic kin migrant workers in the context of structural challenges in Türkiye’s labor market and the future need for a qualified workforce. The challenges Türkiye faces, such as demographic change, youth unemployment, and deficiencies in vocational education, are increasing the need for skilled labor from foreign sources day by day. In this context, migrant workers from the Turkic Republics represent significant potential in the labor market due to their cultural and linguistic affinities with Türkiye.
In today’s world, migration is not merely a phenomenon that affects the lives of individuals; it also plays a significant role in shaping the social and economic structures of countries. The impact of migrants on labor markets, in particular, has become increasingly important for both industrialized and developing nations. Within this framework, examining Türkiye’s need for foreign labor and the potential contribution of migrants of Turkic origin to meeting this need is highly valuable from both scientific and practical perspectives.
Prepared within this framework, the report titled “Socioeconomic Impacts of One Million Ethnic Kin Migrant Workers on Türkiye” comprehensively examines the economic and social impacts of the potential contribution of ethnic kin migrant workers in the context of structural challenges in Türkiye’s labor market and the future need for a qualified workforce. The challenges Türkiye faces, such as demographic change, youth unemployment, and deficiencies in vocational education, are increasing the need for skilled labor from foreign sources. The report analyzes the barriers faced by migrant workers of Turkic origin, including informal employment, language and occupational deficiencies, and the misuse of intermediary firms, while emphasizing the importance of innovative migration management systems in overcoming these challenges. It also considers the development of migrants’ sector-specific skills through vocational training programs and public-private partnerships as a strategic necessity for increasing their long-term contribution to the Turkish economy. Supported by recommendations concerning social cohesion, social support mechanisms, and citizenship processes, the study demonstrates that the integration of migrants of Turkic origin represents a critical opportunity for Türkiye in terms of economic productivity and social cohesion.
