Our study analyzes Konya’s current position from a multidimensional perspective at both the national and international levels, based on the premise that cities have emerged as a decisive force surpassing nation-states in the 21st century. The analysis evaluates Konya across seven key competitiveness criteria: economic performance, infrastructure, human capital, quality of life, governance, digitalization, and climate resilience.
Our report, titled “What Konya Needs to Do to Become a Globally Competitive City: An Impact Analysis,” analyzes Konya’s current position from a multidimensional perspective at both the national and international levels, based on the premise that cities have emerged as a decisive force surpassing nation-states in the 21st century. The analysis evaluates Konya across seven key competitiveness criteria: economic performance, infrastructure, human capital, quality of life, governance, digitalization, and climate resilience.
The research demonstrates that Konya’s strong industrial infrastructure, strategic logistics position, young population, and renewable energy potential provide the city with a solid foundation for a global leap forward. However, gaps in areas such as R&D commercialization, branding, and high value-added production require strategic intervention.
Building on the finding that, although Konya is not directly included in international indices, it ranks among Türkiye’s leading provinces across many of the indicators used in these indices, we identify five strategic areas of transformation: economic competitiveness and sectoral specialization; green and digital transformation; human capital development; infrastructure, transportation, and logistics; and governance and stakeholder participation.
Our study presents a three-stage strategic roadmap, ranging from achieving quick wins in the short term through data-driven monitoring systems and pilot initiatives, to implementing international partnerships and investment attraction strategies in the medium term, and ultimately, in the long term, establishing a city profile that is approaching carbon neutrality, specialized in knowledge-intensive sectors, and visible in global indices. Ultimately, we emphasize that the success of this transformation will depend on strong cooperation among the public sector, private sector, academia, civil society, and all residents of Konya.
